In addition to the urinary system diseases, urology also covers the field of male genital organs. Scientific progress over the recent years has led to a significant improvement in diagnostics and treatment of urological tumors. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

A new method for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia at the Confraternität Private Hospital

Every third man in Austria suffers from benign enlargement of the prostate, which is also often referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia. Sometimes, patients experience such symptoms as frequent urination, bladder dysfunction, and inflammation. These are just some of the symptoms that always require examination of a urologist. If drug therapy is ineffective for alleviating the symptoms, surgery should be considered.

Prostatic artery embolization is a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anesthesia. A catheter is introduced into the prostatic artery under radiological control. Then the thinnest microcatheter is introduced into the arteries that provide blood supply to the prostate. Through a microcatheter, tiny embolizing particles are injected into the prostatic arterial vessels and block them. As a result, the organ is naturally reduced in size. It is important to note that the procedure is absolutely painless, the patient remains conscious all the time. If the patient feels well, he can leave the hospital on the following day. Complications are extremely rare.

Teamwork between the urologist and the radiologist is of utmost importance, not only during surgery but also throughout the entire treatment period.
