A Child - the Greatest Wonder In the World

Prof. Dr. Stefan Jirecek

Medical Fields:

Gynecology and obstetrics, reproductive medicine

Additional Occupation

Head of Döbling Fertility Center

At the fertility center, patients are never alone. A pleasant atmosphere and a friendly staff contribute to the great success of the clinic. A multidisciplinary team of gynecologists, urologists, biologists, laboratory technicians and psychotherapists look after the patients. In conversation with Dr. Jirecek makes it clear that the fertility center is one of the most modern institutes for assisted pregnancy.

When should I get medical help?

One speaks of infertility or, more precisely, of an unfulfilled desire to have children if a woman does not become pregnant within a year with regular sexual intercourse (2 times per week) and without contraception. Then you should start to clarify the causes.

What are the advantages of your center?

We offer personal and continuous care and treatment at the highest level. The patient couple is cared for by the same specialist from the beginning to the end of the therapy. Our modern laboratory is headed by a top biologist.

Do you have waiting lists?

No. An initial meeting can be arranged within a few days. The doctor who admits the couple makes the diagnosis, determines the therapy and organizes any further examinations, operations and explains all findings to the couple.

What methods do you use to facilitate parenting?

In our institute all methods of reproductive medicine that are common according to the current state of science are offered: ICSI, IMSI, assisted hatching, Embryo Glue (embryo transfer medium which aids in implantation of embryos) to seminal plasma washing, cryopreservation and much more.

How successful are these methods?

The pregnancy rate is on average 50% per attempt, higher in younger patients and lower in older patients.

Which reports are required for the initial consultation?

Basically none. If hormone findings or a fallopian tube x-ray are already available, it is an advantage. We can do all the necessary tests on site.

How long does the entire fertility treatment take?

The duration is one menstrual cycle, about a month.

What can be done in case of male infertility?

Basically, one sperm cell per egg cell is sufficient. If there is no sperm cell in the ejaculate, urological procedures can be used to try to get it. One of these interventions is TESE (testicular biopsy) through which we try to get sperm cells from the testicle walls. There are also other methods such as the MESA. With this method, like looking for sperm cells in the epididymis - this is part of the organ that lies on the testicle. Which method we use is always decided by the urologist and andrologist together. Male infertility, although so common, is still a taboo subject today. That is why it often goes undetected for so long.

Is there an age limit for in vitro fertilization?

Realistically, the possibility of getting pregnant with your own eggs ends between the ages of 41 and 45. After that, the woman needs an egg donation. This has been permitted by law in Austria in 2015.

How often may a woman undergo artificial fertilization?

There are no restrictions, but it is known that the probability of pregnancy decreases after the 6th unsuccessful attempt. In order to prevent so many attempts, one should come to the doctor in good time. This affects particulary men who are reluctant to apply to a fertility center.
