Healthy and Fit Into Old Age

Prevention is particularly important in old age - most cancers occur in patients over 60 years of age. As for all patients, the same applies to seniors: the earlier a disease is recognized, the better the chances of recovery.

Especially in the 50+ generation, maintaining health and fitness are the most important prerequisites for a high quality of life and a self-determined, fulfilled life. The goal is to live in good health, with a quality of life and productivity for as long as possible.

It is said that women care more about health care than men?

Yes, generally this is true. However, women under 50 go to cancer screenings more often than older women, and this is paradoxical because most cancers do occur at the age of 60 and above. Regular preventive care is particularly important for postmenopausal women.

Why do men go to the doctor less often?

Many men do not see the doctor until they are really sick. Examinations are avoided because they are uncomfortable or because one does not want to deal with serious illnesses. Men avoid visits to the doctor because they fear an unpleasant diagnosis, the possible effects of a disease and its treatment. They inform themselves less or downplay the severity of the symptoms. However, men's health has become more important in recent years and more and more men are becoming more aware of their health.

Why is sport important also in old age?

Sports activity creates satisfaction, a good feeling about your body, protects against various diseases and has an antidepressant effect. There are many good reasons to start even at an advanced age, even for chronically ill people or people who have not done any sport for a long time. However, you should ask your doctor which sports are suitable for you.

Why should older people in particular take advantage of regular cancer screening?

The majority of all cancer patients are over 65 years of age. The earlier a cancer is discovered, the better the chances of recovery - at any age. New research shows that older people survive cancer on average as long as younger people. It is not so much the age of the patient that determines the success of a cancer therapy, but the general physical and mental condition and other factors of the disease.

Heart and circulatory diseases are the biggest problem – you can do something against it

Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death. They are often caused by an unhealthy lifestyle over a long period of time. Damage to the vessels such as arteriosclerosis is tricky: it often does not cause any symptoms for a long time. The health check can provide initial information like bad blood results or diseases. The doctor can then initiate therapy in good time, and in many cases this can prevent a heart attack.

Deposits in the carotid arteries or in the small vessels of the brain also need to be checked as they can cause a stroke.

Eyesight and hearing also decrease with age ...

Those who want to enjoy retirement with all their senses should also have their eyes and ears checked regularly. Increasing hearing loss is a typical symptom of old age. Only those who can hear well can participate in social life. Studies have shown that this can also reduce the risk of dementia.

Good vision aids can also promote mental fitness. Through regular examinations by the ophthalmologist, widespread diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma can be detected early and treated easily.

Many older people suffer from arthritis or osteoporosis

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis often reduce the quality of life in old age. In the case of rheumatoid arthritis, in particular, therapy should be given quickly after the onset of symptoms in order to avoid permanent damage to the joints.

Bone density measurements are important in assessing the risk of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can be prevented through a diet rich in calcium and regular exercise outdoors. If the bone density is already too low, there are also various drug therapies.

The thyroid gland - a small organ with a big impact

The thyroid gland in older people works differently, with age the classic symptoms of under- or over-function change and are sometimes confused with other age-related diseases. That is why an accurate diagnostic check is important. Thyroid hormones are not only important for many organs, they also have a significant influence on people's psyche and emotional balance.

How important are vaccinations in old age?

The functionality of the immune system declines with age, which is why prevention by vaccination is particularly important. Many older people underestimate the importance of vaccinations. The course of diseases can be more severe and with more complications in old age. Doctors recommend maintaining protection against flu and pneumococci (bacteria that can cause pneumonia, among other things) through regular vaccinations. Booster vaccinations against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis are just as important.
